幕府への降伏を決めた長州藩の決定を不服とする高杉晋作の率いる僅か100名にすらも満たない長州藩士が「功山寺決起」と呼ばれる藩内の政変に成功し、長州藩の幕府への降伏の決定を撤回させました。
Protesting against their Domain deciding to surrender, only fewer than 100 Choshu Domain Samurai lead by Shinsaku Takasugi succeeded in a coup in Choshu Domain and made their Domain retract the decision to surrender.
高杉晋作は、日本の兵隊も西洋の兵隊のように武士でない民間人も軍人として採用する必要があると考え、その先駆けとして「奇兵隊」という軍隊を指揮していました。

そして、下級武士であるにもかかわらず、大胆にも家老に扮し、通訳のアーネストサトウと伊藤博文を引き連れ、相手方の代表との下関戦争の和平交渉に臨みました。
Although he was a low-ranking Samurai, having his translator, Earnest Sato and Hirobumi Ito accompany him, he boldly pretended a high-ranking Samurai to have the peace negotiation of Shimonoseki War with the counterpart’s representatives.
その結果、長州藩は彦島の割譲を免れ、多額の賠償金を長州藩にではなく幕府に要求させることに成功しました。
As a result, he succeeded in making them give up the cession of Hikoshima Island and demand Bakufu, not Choshu Domain to obtain a very large amount of the damage.
