長州藩士が重要人物の暗殺や京都市内での騒乱を企てているとして新撰組が1864年に長藩士数名を殺傷し、逮捕者に拷問を加える事件が起きました（池田屋事件）。
Being accused of plotting to assassinate some key personnel and to cause a disturbance in Kyoyo town, several Choshu Domain Samurai got killed, injured, arrested, and tortured by the garrison patrol in 1864.
これに憤った長州藩士は朝廷での勢力奪還を狙って御所を急襲しましたが、蛤御門を防御していた会津藩士と薩摩藩士の返り討ちに遭いました（禁門の変）。
Resenting it, Choshu Domain Samurai attempted a surprise attack on the Imperial Palace to regain their power in the dynasty, but they rather got defeated by Aizu Domain Samurai and Satsuma Domain Samurai defending Hamaguri Gate of the palace.
禁門の変によって朝敵となった長州藩を征伐するため、幕府が圧倒的な規模の軍隊を送ると、長州藩は速やかに降伏することを決めました。
Once Bakufu dispatched their overwhelming size of the troop to subjugate Choshu Domain who turned the dynasty’s enemy for giving a surprise attack on the Imperial Palace, Choshu Domain immediately decided to surrender.
また、イギリス、フランス、アメリカ、オランダの連合艦隊が1863年の長州藩士の報復として長州藩との下関戦争を開戦し、長州藩に徹底的な海上砲撃を1864年に加えて叩きのめしました。
Also, to retaliate Choshu Domain Samurai’s artillery attack in 1863, the allied fleet of the English, the French, the American, and the Dutch broke out Shimonoseki War against Choshu Domain and they devastated Choshu Domain with their thorough artillery attack in 1864.
