After getting the dynasty aristocrats stating that the Westerners have got to be repelled by force on their side, some ambitious and radical progressive Choshu Domain Samurai were plotting to secretively put the dynasty under control and to overthrow Bakufu.
攘夷の決意を示すため、1863年に長藩士は関門海峡で西洋船に向けて砲撃を加えました。
Trying to show their determination, they fired against the Western vessels at Kanmon Strait in 1863.
かように向こう見ずな軍事行動は国家の安全を徒に脅したと考え、薩摩藩は会津藩と佐幕派の公家とともに攘夷派の長州藩士と公家を朝廷から追放しました（文久三年八月十八日の政変）。
Satsuma Domain decided that such reckless military action only threatened Japan’s national security, so they cooperated with Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture) and those dynasty aristocrats who were supporting Bakufu’s policies to purge those Choshu Domain Samurai and the dynasty aristocrats stating that the Westerners have got to be repelled by force.
この政変の後、長州藩士は京都に潜伏し続け、朝廷での勢力を奪還する機会を窺っていました。
After this incident, Choshu Domain Samurai were hiding in Kyoto and waiting for the timing to regain their power in the dynasty.
