Saicho was also another outstandingly brilliant one who went to China together with Kukai.
Unlike Kukai, he passed the elite bureaucrat exam very smoothly and quickly.
Japan’s dynasty (the central government at the time) saw him as the ace who would bring the cutting-edge knowledge and skills back and establish his school in Japan.
Since the dynasty wanted to make it happen as soon as possible and thought a year would do for Saicho, they called him back a year after he left.
Meanwhile, after 2 years of studying abroad, Kukai came back to strive spreading Esoteric Buddism in Japan, and he later on established his school.
