やがて阿弥陀如来によって救われることを端的に説いた浄土宗が平安中期にとても流行りました。

また、平安後期には仏僧の法然が「南無阿弥陀仏」と唱え続けているだけで救われると説きました（専修念仏）。

鎌倉初期に法然の弟子の親鸞が浄土真宗を開き、真剣に救いを求める者ほど救われる可能性が高くなると説きました（悪人正機説）。

そして、鎌倉中期には一遍が時宗を開き、踊念仏により救われると説きました。
