平安時代後期には朝廷貴族だけでなく、寺院も武士を雇い入れ、僧兵としていました。
In the late Heian Era, not only aristocratic families in the dynasty were hiring Samurai, but also Buddhism temples were hiring Samurai as their armed bonze.
僧兵は朝廷の軍と度々戦闘することもあり、1080年辺りからは寺院が朝廷に対して頻繁に強訴するようにもなっていました。
The armed bonze occasionally had fought against the dynasty’s troop, and Buddhism temples had violently appealed to the dynasty often since around 1080.
反乱を抑えるためとはいえ、寺院に攻め入ることに罪の意識を抱き、天罰を恐れていた朝廷はかような汚れ役を武士に任せきるようになっていました。
Because the dynasty felt guilty of attacking Buddhism temples and feared its heaven’s punishment, they had had Samurai do the dirty work to suppress their rebellious acts.
このようにして、ますます朝廷は武士の軍事力に頼りきるようになっていったのです。
Thus, the dynasty had been increasingly and heavily depending on Samurai’s military power.
