以前「藤原氏」というタイトルのブログで書いたように当時の貴族社会の夫婦は妻方の実家に住まい、妻方の父親は夫婦の子を後見人として養育するのが慣わしでした。
As I wrote in my weblog article titled, “Fujiwara Clan”, in aristocratic society at that time, it was customary that married couples lived in wives’ parents’ houses, and wives’ fathers raised the couples’ children as their guardians.
そして、藤原氏は朝廷での権力維持のためにこの慣わしを巧みに利用し、およそ500年もに亘って皇族の要人と娘とを政略結婚させていました。
To keep their power in the dynasty, Fujiwara Clan had tactically been using this very custom by getting their daughters to get married with the important Imperial family members for about a half millennium.
ところが、11世紀には夫婦が夫方の実家に住まい、夫方の父親が夫婦の子を後見人として養育するように貴族の生活様式が変わったのです。
However, in the 11th Century, the aristocratic families’ lifestyle had changed, and married couples started living in husbands’ parents’ houses, and husbands’ fathers began raising the couples’ children as their guardians.
こうして500年ほど続いていた藤原氏の手法は使えなくなり、1068年にはようやく母方が藤原氏出自でない後三条天皇が即位されました。
Thus, Fujiwara Clan’s about a half millennium long method had lost its effectiveness; in 1068, Gosanjo Emperor whose mother wasn’t related to Fujiwara Clan finally had come to the throne.
