桓武天皇は仏僧たちが強い力を持つ奈良から離れるため、784年に長岡（京都府）への遷都することを告知されました。
In 784, Kanmu Emperor announced to transfer the capital from Nara where bonzes had so much power to Nagaoka (Kyoto Prefecture).
ところが、長岡京建設を任された藤原種継がその告知の翌年何者かに暗殺されてしまいました。
However, a year after the announcement, someone assassinated Tanetsugu Fujiwara who was assigned to build the new capital in Nagaoka.
桓武天皇の弟で皇太子であられた早良親王は一貫して無実を訴えたにもかかわらず、藤原種継の暗殺を企てた者たちの一員とされてしまいました。
Yet Kanmu Emperor’s brother, Prince Sawara who was also the Crown prince pledged his innocence throughout, he was accused of being a member of the group which assassinated Tanetsugu Fujiwara.
そして、淡路島への流刑に処されたことに憤り、船の上で絶食され、薨去されてしまいました。
Resenting to being exiled to Awaji Island, he went on a hunger strike and died on the boat to the island.
