何とか藤原氏の朝廷での絶大な権力を死守しようとしていた藤原4子（藤原不比等の4人の息子）は、妹の光明子を皇后にしようと企んでいました。
To somehow keep Fujiwara Clan’s significant power in the dynasty, Fuhito Fujiwara’s 4 sons plotted to make their sister, Komyoshi turn the Empress.
もっとも、皇族出身でない限り、たとえ天皇の妻でも皇后になれないのがそれまでの慣わしでした。
However, it had been customary that unless one is the Imperial family member, even the Emperor’s wife cannot be the Empresses.
その慣習のことを長屋王は当然指摘し、企みを頓挫させるであろうと考えた藤原4子は、729年に反逆罪の濡れ衣を長屋王に着せ、大軍で長屋王の邸宅を包囲しました。
Thinking that King Nagaya would certainly bring out this custom to devastate the plot, Fuhito Fujiwara’s 4 sons falsely accused King Nagaya of treason and surrounded his house with so many troops in 729.
長屋王と一家は失意の果てに邸宅内で自害されてしまわれました。
Out of despair, King Nagaya and his family members committed suicide inside their house.
その数ヶ月後、企み通り光明子は皇后となりましたが、736年に藤原4子は謎の病（天然痘？）で次々と全員死んでいきました。
As plotted, Komyoshi turned Komyo Empress several months after this terrible incident; however, all Fuhito Fujiwara’s 4 sons died one after another for unknown illness (Smallpox?) in 736.
