伏見街道を進軍中であった幕府軍は新政府軍の作戦に引っかかり、想定外にも惨敗を喫してしまいました。
Being trapped by Neo Government Troop’s operation while marching on Fushimi Main Road, Bakufu Troop got badly devastated unexpectedly.
数日籠城して援軍を待てば、幕府軍は勝利できた戦いであったにもかかわらず、徳川慶喜は城を脱出して幕府の軍艦で江戸へ帰ることを選択しました。
Although Bakufu Troop could win the battle if they held up in the castle for a couple of days and waited for reinforcements, Yoshinobu Tokugawa opted to escape from the castle and to go back to Edo by Bakufu’s warship.
これにより新政府軍は江戸まで悠々易々と進軍し、幕府代表の勝海舟と新政府代表の西郷隆盛が1868年の3月に話し合いの場を設けることとなりました。
This resulted in letting Neo Government Troop reach Edo smoothly and easily, and Bakufu’s representative, Kaishu Katsu and Neo Government’s representative, Takamori Saigo decided to have a meeting in March of 1868.
幕府陣営には250年以上持ち続けた政治の実権を明け渡すことに激しい抵抗があったものの、100万人都市の江戸が戦場と化して火の海となれば、西洋諸国の日本の植民地化を容易にさせてしまうことを知っていました。
Although Bakufu personnel were very reluctant to give up the political power which they held over 250 years, they knew if Edo with a population of over a million turned into war zone and a blazing inferno, it would help the Westerners easily colonize Japan.
そこで、江戸城を無血開城するという歴史的な英断がなされたのです。
Accordingly, they made the historically wise decision to give up Edo Castle with good grace.
新政府軍への降伏に抵抗する旧幕府軍はこの後1年ほど戊辰戦争を各地で続けましたが、国力を疲弊させるような内戦になる前に鎮圧されました。
Resisting to surrendering Neo Government Troop, Paleo Bakufu Troop kept Boshin Civil War for another year or so in some local places yet, they were finally put down before the civil war got escalated to exhaust the national resources.
