バテレン追放令 Deporting the Missionaries

スペインやポルトガルは16世紀に植民地候補とする国に宣教師を積極的に送り込み、現地で諜報活動をさせていました。

The Spanish and the Portuguese in the 16th Century had been aggressively sending the missionaries to their target countries to colonize and having them conduct espionage there.

先ずは現地の民衆をキリシタンにさせ、従うべき権威は教会だけである以上、現地の権力に対して反乱を起こす必要があると信じ込ませていました。

They first had those missionaries get the local people to become Christians and to believe that since the only authority they should follow is the Church, they need to have revolts against the power there.

そして、反乱を起こす民衆を軍事支援して現地の権力を十分弱体化させたところを容易く植民地化していっていました。

After giving those who had a revolt their militaristic support and adequately weakening the local power, they had smoothly colonized their target countries.

植民地となった国の金銀財宝は略奪され、多くの民衆は虐殺、搾取されたり奴隷として売られたりしていました。

The gold, silver, and other valuable properties in the colonized countries had been plundered, and many of the people there had been massacred, exploited, or sold as slaves.

この事実を聞いた豊臣秀吉は九州征伐の後、1587年にバテレン（ポルトガル語で「神父」）追放令を出し、宣教師を国外追放しました。

Hearing this fact, Hideyoshi Toyotomi gave the order to deport the missionaries in 1587 after totally putting Kyushu Island under his control.

伝統を守るより実力を持つ方が遥かに重要な戦国時代においては織田信長のような革新的合理主義者が大いに活躍できました。

During Japan’s Warring States Period when being competent was way more important than keeping the tradition, a progressive rationalist like Nobunaga Oda could greatly succeed.

また、かような時代背景があったからこそ、地侍に過ぎなかった木下藤吉郎（羽柴秀吉）が顕著な優秀さを買われ、戦国大名にまで取り立てられえたのです。

Also, due to such historical background, a remarkably competent one yet a mere native Samurai, Tokichiro Kinoshita (Hideyoshi Hashiba) could be hired by Nobunaga Oda and promoted all the way to turn a Warring States feudal lord.

天下人となった豊臣秀吉は統一的方法で全国の農地を検地し（太閤検地）、各分国の石高（現在のGDPのような国力を計る指標）を正確に把握しました。

As soon as he came to rule over all the domains in Japan, he surveyed the rice production level (the index to measure a nation’s wealth like today’s GDP) of each and every domain accurately by measuring the size of farmland with the unified method.

そして、一揆を抑制し、領国すべての潜在的武力を正確に把握しておくため、全国的に刀狩りを実施しました。

As well as to prevent Ikki, to know each and every domain’s potential militaristic power accurately, he took away all the weapons the farmers possessed in their autonomous villages.

清洲会議 The Conference at Kiyosu Castle

本能寺の変が起きたときに織田信長の主要な家臣は都から遠く離れた地方の戦国大名との戦の最中でした。

When the Incident of Honnoji Temple happened, the major vassals of Nobunaga Oda were in the battles against the Warring State feudal lords in local areas very far from the capital.

ところが、報せを聞いた羽柴秀吉は驚異的な速さで都に駆けつけ（中国大返し）、明智光秀に十分準備を整える間をまったく与えず、容易く明智光秀を討ったのでした。

However, as soon as Hideyoshi Hashiba heard about the incident, he rushed to the capital amazingly fast, and he easily subjugated Mitsuhide Akechi who didn’t have enough time at all to prepare well.

この飛び抜けた功績により、清洲城（愛知県）での会議に参加した織田信長の主要な家臣は、羽柴秀吉が織田信長の正統な後継者に相応しいとする結論に賛成せざるをえませんでした。

Owing to this outstanding job, Nobunaga Oda’s major vassals participating the conference at Kiyosu Castle (Aichi Prefecture) had to agree that he deserves to be the legitimate successor of Nobunaga Oda.

その後、羽柴秀吉は賤ヶ岳（滋賀県）の戦いで反目していた柴田勝家を破り、抵抗していた残りの小田原、四国、九州の地方勢力も制圧し終えました。

Later, in the Battle of Shizugatake (Shiga Prefecture), he defeated Katsuie Shibata who was opposing him,  and he finished conquering the rest of the resisting local power in Odawara, Shikoku, and Kyushu Areas.

そして、天下人となった羽柴秀吉は朝廷から貴族以外に授けられる最高位である関白の位を授けられ、姓を羽柴から豊臣に改めました。

Once he came to rule over all the domains in Japan,　he received the highest rank for non-aristocrats, the chief advisor from the dynasty, and he changed his last name from Hashiba to Toyotomi.

本能寺の変 The Incident of Honnoji Temple

織田信長は1575年の長篠（愛知県）の戦いで甲斐のような軍事大国を大量の火縄銃を使った戦法により破り、天下人になるのはもはや時間の問題でした。

Defeating such a great militaristic power, Kai in the Battle of Nagashino (Aichi Prefecture) in 1575 with his tactics of using lots of matchlocks, it was only a question of when Nobunaga Oda would come to rule over all the domains in Japan.

そんな織田信長も家臣である三河（静岡県）の徳川家康がいずれ大きな脅威となることを危惧し、徳川家康の暗殺を企てていたのではないかという話があります。

Since he was feeling apprehensive about his vassal, Ieyasu Tokugawa from Mikawa (Shizuoka Prefecture) who could become a great threat to him sometime in future, some say that he might have been plotting to assassinate him.

この話によれば、織田信長は1582年に参加者の武装解除が実質必要となる都の本能寺での会合に徳川家康を誘き寄せるよう徳川家康の接待担当であった家臣の明智光秀に命じたというのです。

According to their theory, in 1582, he ordered his vassal, Mitsuhide Akechi who was in charge of entertaining Ieyasu Tokugawa to invite him to the meeting at Honnoji Temple in the capital where the attendees substantially had to disarm themselves.

然るに、この話では、明智光秀は会合が罠であることを徳川家康に告げ、無防備状態で本能寺にいた織田信長を替わりに討ったというのです。

However, the theory says that Mitsuhide Akechi gave Ieyasu Tokugawa the truth about the entrapment, and he instead subjugated defenseless Nobunaga Oda at Honnoji Temple.

室町幕府の終わり The End of Muromachi Bakufu

一時的に幕府の実権を握った松永久秀でしたが、再び三好氏が権力を奪い返しました。

Although Hisahide Matsunaga temporarily had the actual control of Bakufu, Miyoshi Clan regained the power back from him.

三好氏は幕府の実権を握っておくため、1568年に足利義栄を14代将軍に据えました。

To keep the actual control of Bakufu, Miyoshi Clan enthroned Yoshihide Ashikaga as the 14th Shogun in 1568.

しかし、すぐに織田信長が足利義輝の弟の足利義昭を幕府に送り、15代将軍に据えさせました。

However, shortly afterwards, Nobunaga Oda sent Yoshiaki Ashikaga, Yoshiteru Ashikaga’s brother to Bakufu, and he made them enthrone him as the 15th Shogun.

足利義昭は聡明で有能な兄のように幕府の再建に尽力しました。

Yoshiaki devoted himself to reconstruct Bakufu like his bright and competent brother had tried to do.

その後、やることなすことに口を出す織田信長に辟易した足利義昭は数名の有力な戦国大名とともに織田信長を討伐することにしました。

Later, being fed up with Nobunaga Oda restricting all his actions, he attempted to subjugate him together with some powerful Warwring States feudal lords.

ところが、足利義昭は返り討ちに遭い、1573年に降伏し、室町幕府は遂に滅びてしまいました。

However, as he failed his attempt and surrendered in 1573, Muromachi Bakufu finally perished.

足利義輝 Yoshiteru Ashikaga

非常に聡明で大変有能であった13代将軍の足利義輝は塚原卜伝のような当時最高レベルの剣豪から直々に武芸を学び、剣の達人となっていました。

Learning the military arts in person from the eminent swordsmen of the time such as Bokuden Tsukahara, the 13th Shogun, Yoshiteru Ashikaga who was very bright and highly competent became a master fencer.

また、名のある戦国大名とも懇意にしていた足利義輝は度々起きていた戦国大名間の諍いも収めていました。

Also, he was making friends with prominent Warring States feudal lords and often even mediating their disputes.

そして、幕府の権威と権力を取り戻すため、足利義輝は積極的に国の有力な人物へ高い位を与えていました。

To regain the authority and power of Bakufu, he was actively bestowing the high ranks to the powerful men in Japan.

ところが、三好氏の家臣の松永久秀が三好長慶を追放し、足利義輝を暗殺して幕府の実権を奪い取ろうと1565年に挙兵しました。

However, to take over the actual control of Bakufu, Miyoshi Clan’s vassal, Hisahide Matsunaga raised an army to purge Nagayoshi Miyoshi and to assassinate Yoshiteru Ashikaga in 1565.

足利義輝は自ら何十人もの刺客を斬って応戦しますが、最終的には自害して果てることとなってしまいました。

Although he alone killed tens of the assassins with his sword and fought back well, he eventually had to give up and to commit suicide.

織田信長 Nobunaga Oda

小国であった尾張の織田信長が桶狭間（愛知県）の戦いで大国であった駿河の今川義元を破ったという信じられないような報せが1560年に日本中を駆け巡りました。

In 1560, the unbelievable news that a minor power, Nobunaga Oda from Owari defeated a major power, Yoshimoto Imagawa from Suruga in the Battle of Okehazama (Aichi Prefecture) spread throughout Japan.

織田信長は領国の経済活動の秩序と安全を確保するために城下町を作らせ、市座のいない自由な市場で公平に課税される環境を整え（楽市楽座）、領国の経済を大いに発展させました。

Nobunaga Oda made castle towns so he could keep the order and the safety of the economic activities in his domain, and he prospered the economy there by getting rid of the guilds and providing free market where merchants were fairly and reasonably taxed.

これにより、全国から多くの有能な人材が集まり、多額の税収を得ることで家臣が農業に携わらずとも生活できるようになりました。

Consequently, attracting many competent talents and gaining much amount of tax revenue, he could afford to pay his vassals well enough not having to do any farming at all.

そのため、家臣は日々訓練に従事し、農繁期であっても出陣できるようになりました。

This enabled his vassals to regularly train themselves and to go to wars during busy farming seasons.

また、織田信長は身分を問わない成果主義を採用し、常に家臣の士氣や兵力を高めていっていました。

He evaluated and treated his vassals based on one’s performance regardless of the one’s class, so their morale and militaristic power were always kept high.

そして、大量の火縄銃を効果的に戦場で使う戦法を使うため、よく改良された火縄銃を堺の商人に大量注文し、念入りに射撃隊を訓練していました。

To use lots of matchlocks effectively in the battle, he placed a bulk order of the well improved matchlocks to the merchants in Sakai, and he trained his fire unit very well.
