厩戸王は小野妹子という使節に大胆にも「日出ずる処の天子、日没する処の天子に本書を送る。」と書かれた書簡を託し、607年に中国へ派遣しました。
King Umayado dispatched an envoy, Imoko Ono to China in 607 with the letter which boldly stated, “The Emperor of the land where the sun rises sends this letter to the emperor of the land where the sun sets.”.
当時隋の皇帝であった煬帝は憤慨したものの、（属国ではない）日本と正式に外交関係を結ぶことを決め、隋の裴世清という使節とともに日本の使節を送り返しました。
Although the Chinese emperor at the time, Yangdi resented it, he decided to have an official diplomatic relationship with Japan (not China’s tributary) and to send the envoys back to Japan with their envoy, Pei Shiquing.
煬帝は当時高句麗を攻め落とそうと画策しており、日本を味方につけるか敵に回すかの判断は決定的に重要でした。
Since Yangdi around that time had been planning to conquer Koguryo, the decision to be either a friend or an enemy of Japan was critically important.
そこで、煬帝は日本と良好な関係を築いておく必要があると判断することを読んでいた厩戸王は今回のような強氣な作戦を実行したに違いありません。
Foreseeing that Yangdi would opt to have a friendly relationship with Japan, King Umayado must have taken such an aggressive action.
