初代征夷大将軍は2度進軍しましたが、阿弖流為の率いる強力な軍に大敗を喫しました。
Although the first Seii Great Shogun lead the troop twice to invade the region, they were badly defeated by the strong troop led by Aterui.
そこで、797年に坂上田村麻呂が二代目征夷大将軍として軍を率いることになりました。
Then, the second Seii Great Shogun, Tamuramaro Sakanoue was assigned to lead the troop in 797.
坂上田村麻呂は進軍する前に、東北全土の豪族の緊密な連携こそ阿弖流為の軍の強さであることも、厳しい生活を送る豪族の一部は朝廷の援助を強く望んでいた実情もしっかり調査して把握していました。
Before engaging in warfare, he had done thorough research and known that the very close cooperation among the powerful families throughout the region was the secret of Aterui’s strong troop, and some of the powerful families were suffering from poverty and actually wishing strongly to be aided by the dynasty.
そこで、朝廷の援助を受けたい豪族には戦闘に参加しないように根回しておき、進軍前に阿弖流為の軍を予め著しく弱体化させておきました。
Therefore, he told those wishing to be aided by the dynasty not to join Aterui’s troop so that he could remarkably weaken his troop beforehand.
そして、5年後には阿弖流為を降伏させることに成功しました。
After 5 years, he successfully made Aterui surrender.
