北条政子（北条義時の姉）は亡くなった夫の源頼朝のような類い希なる政治的手腕を振っていました。
Like her deceased husband, Yoritomo Minamoto, Masako Hojo (Yoshitoki Hojo’s sister) had been exerting her outstanding political sense.
源頼朝を亡くしたときに出家入道し、他の2人の将軍も大いに支えた北条政子は「尼将軍」と呼ばれていました。
Since she had greatly supported the other 2 Shogun after losing her husband and becoming a bonze, she was called, “Nun Shogun”.
そして、北条政子は後鳥羽上皇の院宣を受けた御家人を集め、涙ながらに以下のような感情に訴えかける演説を行ないました。
Masako Hojo gathered those Gokenin who got the order from Gotoba Grand Emperor, and she showed tears in her eyes and made the following emotional speech:
「われわれ武士が嘗て朝廷貴族に蔑まされ、都合よく扱き使われていたあの辛い日々を誰が救ってくれたのかもうお忘れですか。源頼朝が幕府を作らねば、われわれがこうしてこの国を統治する立場に誇り高く君臨することなど到底ありえませんでした。今こそその恩に報い、幕府を守るために戦う時ではないですか。それでも朝廷につく者がこの中にいるのなら私は止めません。しかし、そうするならここを出る前に私を斬り捨ててお行きなさい。」
“Did you already forget who saved us from the bitter days when we, Samurai had been disrespected and exploited by the aristocrats in the dynasty? If there weren’t Yoritomo Minamoto who established Bakufu, we would never have had a chance to proudly reign in the position of governing this country. Isn’t now the time to repay him by fighting to protect Bakufu? Even so, if there’s anyone here wishing to obey the dynasty, I wouldn’t stop it. However, those who’d opt to do so have to kill me before leaving here.
すべての御家人はその演説で心に火がつき、朝廷の軍を倒すことを決意しました。
Being inspired by her speech, all Gokenin decided to defeat the dynasty’s troop.
