今川氏の客人に過ぎなかった北条早雲は相模（神奈川県）の任国2つを攻め落として乗っ取り、初の戦国大名となりました。
A mere guest of Imagawa Clan, Soun Hojo defeated and took over the 2 domains in Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture) and became Japan’s first Warring States feudal lord.
油売りの子に過ぎなかった斎藤道三も美濃（岐阜県）の土岐氏やその家臣の長井氏、斎藤氏を追放して任国の乗っ取り（国盗り）に成功し、戦国大名となりました。
Succeeding in purging Toki Clan and their vassals, Nagai Clan and Saito Clan in Mino (Gifu Prefecture), a mere oil vendor’s son, Dosan Saito took over their domain and became a Warring States feudal lord as well.
また、幕府に見切りをつけた甲斐（山梨県）の武田氏や駿河（静岡県）の今川氏などの守護大名も戦国大名に転身しました。
Losing their loyalty to Bakufu, some Shugo feudal lords like Takeda Clan in Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture) and Imagawa Clan in Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture) also turned Warring States feudal lords.
有力な守護大名は応仁の乱に参戦するために任国を離れていたため、家臣を守護代に任命して10年ほど守護職を任せておかざるをえない状況にありました。

その間、越前（福井県）の朝倉氏や尾張（愛知県）の織田氏などの守護代は下克上を起こして任国を乗っ取ることで戦国大名に転身しました。
During which time, some Deputy Shugo like Asakura Clan in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture) and Oda Clan in Owari (Aich Prefecture) supplanted to take over the domains and turned Warring States feudal lords.
