平氏の軍事力は衰退していたものの、非常に優れた航行技術で長く海運業を営んできた平氏の水軍力は源氏のそれを圧倒していました。
Even though Heishi’s militaristic power had been weakened, their naval power overwhelmed Genji’s since they had been operating marine transportation business with the finest sailing technology for a long time.
中でも激しい瀬戸内海の潮流に阻まれた屋島（香川県）の海岸にあった平氏の水軍基地は恰も難攻不落の要塞でした。
Especially Heishi’s naval base on the seashore of Yashima Island (Kagawa Prefecture) was like an impregnable fortress owing to the violent tidal current of Setouchi Inland Sea.
そこで、奇襲をかけるため、源義経は5隻の船を率いて1185年2月の嵐の夜に瀬戸内海を渡って屋島上陸に成功し、朝に陸から平氏の水軍基地を攻めたのです。
So, to give a surprise attack, Yoshitsune Minamoto and his 5 boats sailed across Setouchi Inland Sea and successfully landed on Yashima Island at a stormy night in February of 1185, and they attacked Heishi’s naval base by land in the morning.
Thus, he defeated totally panicked Heishi’s troop.
源氏の飛び抜けた勇敢さと強さを知った平氏の水軍の多くが源氏に寝返った結果、源氏は優れた海上戦力をも手に入れることになりました。
Seeing Genji’s outrageous courage and strength, many decided to go over to Genji, and Genji got much mightier naval power as well.
他方、平氏の誇りを棄てなかった平氏武士は本州の最西端へ撤退していきました。
Those Heishi Samurai who didn’t give up Heishi’s pride retreated to the west end of Honshu Island.
