幕府にも荘園領主にも仕えていない「悪党」と呼ばれていた武士の集団が当時台頭していました。
Samurai groups called, “the Rouges” who didn’t serve either Bakufu or a lord of the manor were rising at the time.
悪党も後醍醐天皇が挙兵した際に参加しており、笠置山で後醍醐天皇が捕まった後も幕府と戦い続けました。
Some of them joined the army that Godaigo Emperor raised, and they kept fighting against Bakufu even after Godaigo Emperor was captured at Mt. Kasagi.
そんな悪党の中でも最も才能豊かであった楠木正成は圧倒的大軍勢の幕府軍も攻めあぐねるほど河内（大阪府）やその周辺で見事なゲリラ戦を展開していました。
Among those, the most talented Samurai, Masashige Kusunoki had been using guerrilla warfare tactics so effectively in and around Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture) that overwhelmingly larger Bakufu’s troop had hard time defeating his troop.
顕著な戦績を残していたものの、1333年に僅か500兵ほどの楠木正成勢は千早城で幕府の軍にで包囲されてしまいました。
In 1333, despite his outstanding combat performance, his only 500 troops in Chihaya Castle ended up being put under siege with Bakufu’s troop.
幕府が巨額の懸賞金を提示したため、そこにはおよそ30万もの兵が集まったそうです。
Because Bakufu offered a tremendous amount of monetary reward, about 300,000 troops gathered there.
