後醍醐天皇の勅に応じ、有力御家人の足利尊氏と新田義貞が幕府に矛先を向けました。
In response to Godaigo Emperor’s Imperial order, 2 of major Gokenin, Takauji Ashikaga and Yoshisada Nitta pointed their spearheads to Bakufu.
足利尊氏は下野（栃木県）の足利氏の長、新田義貞は上野（群馬県）の新田氏の長であり、源氏直系の源義国の血族でした。
Takauji Ashikaga was the head of Ashikaga Clan in Shimono (Tochigi Prefecture), and Yoshisada Nitta was the head of Ueno (Gunma Prefecture); both were blood related to Yoshikuni Minamoto who was on the direct line of Genji.
加えて、足利氏は北条氏の婚族でもあったため、幕府から他の御家人より大変厚遇されていました。
In addition, Ashikaga Clan was related to Hojo Clan by marriage, so they were treated much better than other Gokenin by Bakufu.
Even though, Takauji Ashikaga put what the Emperor says his top priority.
そして、当時都の幕府機関の警護を任されていた足利尊氏は六波羅探題を攻め落としました。
Although he was assigned to protect Bakufu’s office in the capital at the time, he stormed and occupied Rokuhara Tandai.
