ところが、藤原秀衡は源義経が平泉に来た8ヶ月後に亡くなってしまいました。

藤原秀衡は死の床で子の藤原泰衡に「源頼朝はいずれ必ず奥州藤原を滅ぼしに来るから、随一の戦の天才である源義経を何としても守りなさい。そして、時機が来たら源義経とともに戦い、奥州藤原を守りなさい。」と伝えたそうです。
When he was about to die, he told his son, Yasuhira Fujiwara, “Yoritomo Minamoto will definitely come to perish Oshu Fujiwara sooner or later, so do whatever it takes to protect Yoshitsune Minamoto, the best war genius. When the timing is right, fight together with him and protect Oshu Fujiwara.”.
そして、源頼朝は藤原泰衡が源義経を匿っていたことを突き止めると、源義経を即刻明け渡すよう藤原泰衡に強く求めました。
Once Yoritomo Minamoto found out that Yasuhira Fujiwara had been harboring Yoshitsune Minamoto, he insisted him to promptly hand over Yoshitsune Minamoto.
