藤原泰衡が源義経の明渡しを拒み続けたため、1189年に源頼朝は、従わなければ、とんでもない数の大軍で平泉へ攻め入らざるをえなくなると警告しました。
As Yasuhira Fujiwara had been refusing to hand over Yoshitsune Minamoto, Yoritomo Minamoto warned him in 1189 that a prodigious number of troop would have to attack Hiraizumihe unless he complies.
その後、藤原泰衡は源頼朝に「500騎の兵で隠れ家を取り囲みましたが、源義経は身柄の引き渡しに応じず、10人の忠臣とともに勇猛果敢に抗戦することを選びました。やがてすべての忠臣を討ち取ると、源義経は最後に自害しました。」と報告しました。
Later, Yasuhira Fujiwara reported him, “Although our 500 mounted-Samurai troops surrounded his hiding place, Yoshitsune Minamoto didn’t give himself up but he and his most loyal 10 vassals rather opted to fight us back bravely. Once we eventually defeated all his vassals, Yoshitsune Minamoto committed suicide at the end.”.
また、要求された源義経の首も藤原泰衡は証拠として鎌倉へ送りました。
Also, as requested, he sent Yoshitsune Minamoto’s head as the proof to Kamakura.
もっとも、通常1週間以内には届けられる首が1ヶ月ほどかけて届けられてきたため、激しい腐敗によりほぼ本人確認ができないような状態になっていました。
However, since the delivery which generally wouldn’t take a week took about a month, the head was so badly rotten that his identity was almost unverifiable.
そこで、源頼朝は奥州藤原を将来的に鎌倉幕府の脅威となりかねないと判断し、数ヶ月後に28万騎の大軍を平泉に送って奥州藤原を攻め滅ぼしました。
Consequently, Yoritomo Minamoto recognized Oshu Fujiwara as the possible threat to Kamakura Bakufu in future, he sent 280,000 mounted-Samurai troop to Hiraizumi a couple of months later, and he perished Oshu Fujiwara.
