軽皇子が皇位継承年齢に達すると、持統天皇はすぐに皇位をお譲りになられました。
As soon as Prince Karu became old enough to be enthroned, Jito Empress abdicated.
そして、持統天皇は文武天皇になられた軽皇子を後見されるため、697年に史上初の太上天皇（上皇）となられました。
Prince Karu came to the throne as Monmu Emperor in 697, and she supported him as
the very first Great Grand Empress (Grand Empress).
しかし、文武天皇は病に倒れ、707年に崩御されてしまわれました。
However, Monmu Emperor suddenly demised in 707 for illness.
文武天皇の子の首皇子が当時皇位継承年齢に達していなかったため、首皇子の母親が元明天皇として暫時即位されることになりました。
Since his son, Prince Obito wasn’t old enough to be enthroned, Prince Obito’s mother temporarily came to the throne as Genmei Empress.
元明天皇は藤原不比等のことを顕著に有能で経験も豊富な非常に頼りになる大臣であると完全なる信頼を寄せていました。
Genmei Empress thoroughly trusted Fuhito Fujiwara as an outstandingly competent, well experienced, and highly dependable minister.
そして、708年に「和同開珎」という日本初の通貨（硬貨）が作られました。
In 708, Japan’s first currency (coins), “Wadokaichin” was made.
なお、和同開珎より前の時代の「富本銭」のような他の硬貨も発見されていますが、実際に通貨として流通していたかは定かでないようです。
Some other coins like “Fuhonsen” were found before Wadokaichin yet, the historians are uncertain if they were practically used as the currency.
