もっとも、生前退位され、今上天皇の実父母として後見される場合はその限りではありません。
However, once he or she abdicates the position and turns the guardians of the Emperor or the Empress at the throne as his or her real and own parent, he or she could be involved in politics.
かような天皇は「太上天皇」（「太上皇」や「上皇」は略称）と言われ、出家入道された上皇は「法皇」と言われます。
Those abdicated Emperors or Empresses are called, “Great Grand Emperor (Empress)” or simply “Grand Emperor (Empress)”, and Grand Emperor (Empress) who also turned bonze are called, “Dharma Emperor (Empress)”.
ここからの平安時代はかような上皇や法皇が朝廷の政治を動かしていかれるようになっていきます。
Later in Heian Era, such abdicated Emperors began exercising the political power of the dynasty.
